I remember the first time I paid to have an oracle reading done, almost three decades ago. The service was offered in a small crystal shop. I felt a mixture of nervous anticipation and electrifying excitement while I was directed to a small room in the back of the store.
The room was dimly lit and smelled of incense and sage. There was soft music playing, and on the walls were some pictures of magical creatures. Behind a small table sat a woman of undefinable age. She looked exactly as I had imagined she would, with long red hair that fell over her shoulders like a waterfall, intense dark and piercing eyes, shiny silver rings on almost all of her fingers, and long purple-colored nails.
She looked me straight in the eyes and smiled. She gestured for me to have a seat on the chair opposite of her on the other side of the table. There were some beautiful crystals, a small candle and a deck of cards in front of her. She asked me my name. Then she asked if I minded if she would touch my hands for a moment to make a deeper connection. I was fascinated with this woman that imbued magic and mystery with every word she spoke. I eagerly held out my hands for her touch and watched her close her eyes while she apparently was listening – or perhaps seeing – in places that were beyond my conscious awareness.
She then started telling me about me in ways that no one had ever described me, so accurately and comprehensive, yet in words that resonated with the parts of me that I had not really shared with anyone. It felt like she spoke directly to my soul. She used the cards to guide us through the insights she revealed, drawing sometimes only one to clarify a particular point, and sometimes she drew several cards to support the stories that were unfolding. She spoke of my life purpose and my gifts that she told me were beyond the ordinary. I had never felt so seen and recognized in my life. I also felt incredibly empowered and on purpose. I walked out of that room that day a different person than how I had walked in.
A lot has changed since then. Not just in my life, but in general. Back then, anything supernatural and occult – including oracle and tarot readings – was often considered unscientific and part of a ‘Woo Woo’ world that was deemed imaginary and unreal.
I have always liked the term Woo Woo. It has been around since the mid-1980-ish. Some have suggested that the words are an interpretation of the sound of a certain instrument called ‘theremin’ that was often used in old fashioned sci-fi and horror movies. To me, the words just feel fun to say and seem like a sound a ghost would make, associating it with the world beyond the ordinary. We don’t know for sure what the origin is exactly, but nevertheless, the term ‘Woo Woo’ or just ‘Woo’ is commonly used to describe anything that is not of the linear and 3D realm.
Almost forty years later we are now witnessing the world of spirit and the world of science rapidly coming together and blend into a new paradigm of a multidimensional reality that increasingly includes the mystical and paranormal. A growing group of people are finding their way to the esoteric world that includes regularly consulting readers and intuitives as a bridge to connect to Spirit, the Universe or their Higher Self. Woo Woo is becoming part of the new normal, opening the door to a wide range of modalities and tools that help us to navigate the new emerging reality in which the veils between worlds are disappearing.
Oracle decks and readings have become a central part of my life. Not only do I use them on a daily basis to seek guidance on my own life path, I have become the woman on the other side of the table – or Zoom screen – that offers the readings. I don’t have magical creatures on my walls, nor do I have a dark room, long purple nails and an abundance of shiny silver rings. Even though I get to play in the realms of spirit, multidimensionality, and magic, I live and look just like you. You can play there too, if you like. By opening yourself up to what lies beyond 3D you might find that Woo is for you too.
