The Break that Forged an Unbreakable Friendship – You never know when you might meet someone who becomes a lifelong friend.
About 25 years ago, I was invited by our MDR spokesperson, Pat Boone, to attend a star-studded charity event in Beverly Hills, where Pat and Hugh Hefner’s Playboy magazine were being honored.
Sitting at our table was Barbie Benton, the love of Hugh Hefner’s life. (She and Pamela Anderson, of Baywatch fame, were tied for the most Playboy covers.) Next to Barbie, was Two-Time, Academy Award-nominated, Singer/Songwriter, Carol Connors. Carol was in excruciating pain with a broken, dislocated ankle. That evening, Barbie was playing nurse and massaging her best friend’s foot over the walking boot that replaced the plaster cast.
Dr. Kenneth Elconin, orthopedic surgeon and doctor to the LA Rams said it was one of the worst breaks he ever saw. Carol laughs now, and says he used so many screws and plates in the surgery that you could serve dinner with the metal in her foot! Dr. Elconin told her that she would never wear high heels again. For someone who is 5 feet tall, that news was as bad as hearing she would not be able to enjoy the sports she loved.
If you suffer a break, or sprain, as Carol did, your body must rally its natural healing processes to make new bone and cartilage. This requires essential nutritional building blocks that come from food and supplements.
All of us need to take care of our bones and joints. When we are young, we move with ease, but over the years, we become stiff, as the lubricating synovial fluid inside joints decreases and cartilage thins.
With aging, bones lose density. Ligaments and tendons become more rigid, and muscles get lax. Our connective tissue, bones, and joints are more easily damaged. As cartilage deteriorates, bones can rub together causing pain, inflammation, and joint destruction. Over 15 million people globally suffer from a painful inflammatory condition called osteoarthritis.
Here are some steps you can take to keep your joints moving with ease so you can enjoy the activities you love:
Stay active:
Regular exercise can help keep your joints healthy. The biggest problem today is being too sedentary.
Protect your joints:
Avoid injuries and repetitive motions or activities that put a lot of stress on your joints.
Eat a balanced diet:
Rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins which can help support joint health. Include cold-water fish, a good source of omega-3s, nuts and seeds, olive oil, and spices like turmeric, ginger, and garlic.
Maintain a healthy weight:
“Excess weight puts extra stress on your joints, especially those in your knees, hips, and spine,” says author and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Zvi Pearlstein. “Proper exercise and movement can help improve joint mobility, posture, flexibility, and strength”, says Dr. Zvi. He wrote a preventive guide called “1 Minute Stretch™” to teach important full range of motion movements and advises we do them daily to stay flexible.
Nourish Your Joints:
Cartilage cells, called chondrocytes, require good nutrition. Here are some nutrients you don’t get in your typical diet that can help support healthy joints.
Glucosamine, chondroitin, shark cartilage, and hyaluronic acid (HA) help support glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) to hydrate cartilage and maintain synovial fluid. They help to reduce joint pain and stiffness and promote greater flexibility. HA holds 1000 times its weight in water and not only hydrates joints, but it also promotes moist, younger-looking skin.
Clinical studies have found the trace element Boron can help relieve knee discomfort and improves mobility. It also supports natural hormones like DHEA and testosterone for muscle synthesis.
Manganese and Copper are required for bone and cartilage regeneration and help form the powerful antioxidant Superoxide Dismutase. This longevity enzyme is reduced in those suffering from osteoarthritis, a condition linked to “oxidative stress”.
Grape Seed, Green Tea, and Curcumin (active in Turmeric) are also powerful antioxidants that can help protect joints from free radical damage, reduce painful inflammation, and aid in recovery after exercise.
Medical Doctors Research combined all these key nutrients into a nutritional formula called MDR Chondro-Pro Healthy Joint Formula.
A few capsules a day supply beneficial cartilage building blocks promoting joint comfort, and mobility. After I sent Chondro-Pro to Carol, first she asked her doctor if she could try it, and he was agreeable. A month later, she went to see her doctor, who was as impressed as she was and said, “When did you become bionic? I don’t even have to do your last X-ray!”
Carol was over the moon! She was back in her 5-inch heels at Hollywood events, scuba-diving, slalom waterskiing, and hiking several miles each morning. After co-writing the iconic hit song “Gonna Fly Now”, the theme from “Rocky”, Carol says, “Thanks to Chondro-Pro, not only can I fly now, I can go the distance.”
After all these years, with no breakup in site, Carol and I are still the best of friends!
