The Power of Sound: Protect Your Soundscape! – Most of us are aware of protecting our valuable eyesight. We wear sunglasses for solar protection and go to the optometrist yearly. We hear the recommendations to limit the amount of violent images seen every day. By perhaps cutting back on watching the “news”. These things are important and make a definite difference in our overall health. But how often do we pay attention to what we are allowing ourselves to HEAR on a daily basis?
Each one of us is made of vibration. Every molecule in our body vibrates all the time. And because sound IS vibration, it has a very powerful effect on our bodies -all the time. So powerful that there is an entire field called Psychoacoustics. Which is the study of the effect of sound on the nervous system!. We perceive sound primarily through our ears, but also through our skin and bones. And like the visual images we are exposed to, it can be a wonderful thing, or negative, even toxic.
If you allow yourself to be surrounded by sounds that don’t match well with your frequencies and vibrational patterns
You can in essence, create a kind of friction in your nervous system. This can result in increasing feelings of stress and anxiety. Likewise, if you allow yourself to be surrounded by sounds that resonate well with the frequencies in your body. You experience positive effects such as a sense of peace, joy, and energy. Take a moment and think of the immediate effect certain sounds have on you in an instant. A jackhammer drilling out concrete, fingernails scratching down a blackboard. VERSUS the effects of the sound of a running stream, leaves gently rustling in the wind or a cat purring. Music is the ultimate example, as certain pieces can make us experience everything from utmost joy and excitement all the way to extreme sadness.
This is ALL caused by the power of sound. This is why ever since humans came to the earth, certain sounds, including music and chanting, has been used for healing individuals by inducing peace and calm. I was so enthralled by this, I chose to go through a wonderful harp therapy program. And have been a harp therapy volunteer for Hospice ever since. I witness the power of sound each and every time I play for patients. Its effect is literally jaw-dropping.
So, since sound affects our bodies so powerfully, wouldn’t you think we’d be very mindful of what sounds we allow ourselves to be around? Unfortunately, this is not the case for most people. They do not realize the drastic effect sound is having on them every day and what can result from this over time.
I encourage you to take one day, or even 1⁄2 of a day, and keep track of noticing what sounds you are surrounded by.
Some you can’t do much to control, but fortunately, the majority you can. You can even make note of them and then think about the sounds that are around you happening over and over and over again, bathing your body (not just your ear canals) in whatever the sound is. IS IT a sound you want to hear? Is it a sound that serves you well? This can be an insightful exercise of awareness that helps you get an idea of what the sounds are. How they might be affecting you, and if you want to continue to allow them.
I had already chosen to unplug from TV before acquiring this increased sound awareness.
But after studying it more and more, I continued to make deliberate changes in my life regarding the sounds around me. Just as I disbanded tv “news” from my life due to the toxic effects of its total focus on the negative and fearful. I also chose to be sound aware when I am standing in a public place. If the people around me seem to be discussing negative, gossipy things.
I deliberately move to a different spot. If I’m with a circle of people and someone starts focusing on all the things they can think of that’s wrong with the world, and then some others join them. I will deliberately excuse myself. Over time I have come to be more particular of not only who I pick to spend time with, but what sounds I allow myself to hear. I also make a point of making sure I get enough silence during each day.
Which is such a welcome relief for our physiology if the rest of the days involve “noise”.
I hope this topic has sparked an interest for you to be a bit more aware of the sounds around you and perhaps create some changes in your soundscape. Who knows, it might even involve creating some new and different friends and social circles from your prior ones. I encourage you to be protective of the vibrational field that is around you. By doing so, you might find that it makes a real difference in your sense of peace, well-being and overall happiness.
