Put the permission slip down… – Most of us are looking for a permission slip to go back to behaviors we never wanted to leave in the first place.
It’s why we periodically ask our coach/mentor/practitioner when they think we might be able to…
- Have an adult beverage or a few
- Eat the food that we know doesn’t serve us, but we miss so much
- Partake in the exercise we know led to our burnout but the mental itch that it scratched is like weaning off of something we were addicted to…because we were.
We begrudgingly leave all of these behaviors behind in the name of balance… or that’s what we call it to quell the inner angst that occurs when we walk away from the familiar, even when that familiar is so uncomfortable.
And, often, we don’t do this voluntarily, as some symptom that has come and gone and come and gone has finally come to stay, has caught our attention, and has made us so ridiculously uncomfortable that we HAVE to take action.
Think about that for a minute…we press the body so hard and push the body so far that it is often left with NO choice but to scream out for help.
We didn’t hear the gentle sighs…
When the pivot would have been simple.. or, more accurately, we heard them and blew past them so we could figure it out “later.”
And… later finally arrives, and often we have the audacity to be annoyed or inconvenienced, refusing to look at our participation in the expression of that healing.
Our idea of balance often clouds our vision as to what it’s actually going to take to create REAL balance within the body, which translates to REAL balance in our life and all aspects of it.
The whole point to pivots and creating intentional (key word here) change is to NOT go back to those behaviors.
In SOME instances, there is, without a doubt, room to find a NEW way to fold in the occasional adult beverage or decadent dessert.
(This is where the concept of nourishment vs. entertainment comes in, but that’s an entirely separate conversation)
I want to be the friend that shoots it to you straight
There are a variety of things in our life that are entirely out of our control AND there are a variety of things in our life that are entirely WITHIN our control…
Our HABITS are within the realm of being within our reach and thus control AND often (notice, I didn’t say always) our life is a sum of the many moving parts (aka habits) in our life.
Am I saying to not have the cake or drink the tequila? Nah.
What I am saying is if you’re doing this on a routine basis there’s a good chance that habit is going to catch up with you and require a CHANGE.
What habits (things you do consistently) can you claim to be yours?
Be honest…
- Winding down with wine…
- Having “just a bite” or 10 of that dessert
- Eating without asking if you are actually hungry beforehand
- Scrolling on social for hours as a way to “decompress”
There are countless things I could list out…
I think you get the point. Remember, we can’t address what we don’t acknowledge.
