Fortifying Your Mental Fortress: Step 5 of the NLP-Powered Transformation – Welcome back to our journey through my 12-step program for ex-military clients, law enforcement, and first responders. In my previous articles, we’ve explored the potency of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) in the earlier steps of goal-setting, self-reflection, communication, emotional intelligence, and overcoming trauma. In Step 5, we embark on “Building Resilience with Neuro-Linguistic Programming.” This step will help you to fortify your mental and emotional resilience, equipping you with the tools to face life’s challenges head-on. Resilience is a quality often synonymous with strength and adaptability. NLP offers us innovative techniques to cultivate this strength. This article will delve into three unique NLP strategies to build and enhance resilience.
1. Circle of Excellence: Harnessing Positive States
The Circle of Excellence is an NLP technique that leverages your positive experiences to create a resourceful state you can access whenever needed. Similar to the method of anchoring, we used it in step 1 to get us to a desired emotional state. The Circle of Excellence technique is particularly effective in building up and strengthening our emotional resilience and confidence.
Recall a Positive Experience:
Think of a time when you felt exceptionally confident, resilient, or empowered. Mentally Revisit the Experience: Close your eyes and vividly relive that positive experience. See what you saw, hear what you heard, and feel what you felt during the pinnacle of that moment.
Create a Mental Circle:
Imagine a circle on the ground before you. Step into this circle, bringing the positive feelings and attributes from the remembered experience with you.
Expand the Circle:
Enlarge the circle to surround you completely. As the circle grows, so does the intensity of your positive feelings. This circle serves as a mental anchor that you can access in challenging situations.
By regularly practicing the Circle of Excellence, you can condition your mind to enter a resilient state at will, empowering you to face adversity with your ever-growing confidence.
2. Six-Step Reframe: Transforming Negative Thoughts
The Six-Step Reframe is an NLP technique that helps transform negative thoughts or behaviors into positive ones, promoting a more resilient mindset.
Identify the Negative Thought:
Recognize a recurring negative thought or behavior.
Determine Positive Intent:
Consider the positive intention behind the negative thought or behavior. Ask yourself, “What is your subconscious attempting to achieve?” Ask as many times as you need to to find the intention.
Find Alternative Strategies:
Explore alternative, positive ways to feel, allowing you to move towards achieving the intended positive outcome.
Ensure Alignment:
Confirm that the alternative strategies align with your values and goals.
Future Pacing:
Mentally rehearse implementing the alternative strategies in future situations, ensuring their effectiveness.
Test:
Apply the alternative strategies in real-life situations, monitoring their impact.
The Six-Step Reframe enables you to reprogram your thought patterns and responses, fostering resilience by turning challenges into opportunities for growth.
3. Outcome Specification: Clarifying Resilient Goals
Outcome Specification is an NLP technique that involves defining your goals with precision, enhancing your ability to work toward and achieve them even in the face of challenges.
Define the Goal:
Clearly articulate your resilience-related goal. For example, “I want to navigate workplace challenges with calm and confidence.” An even more precise definition would be, “I WILL navigate workplace challenges in a calm and confident emotional state.”
Specify Sensory-Based Evidence:
Outline the sensory-based evidence that will indicate the success of achieving your goal. What will you see, hear, and feel when you’re calmly and confidently exhibiting resilience?
Check for Ecology:
Ensure that your goal is aligned with your values and positively affects various aspects of your life.
Flexibility in Behavior:
Identify multiple ways to achieve your goal, allowing for flexibility in your approach.
By using Outcome Specification, you create a roadmap for building resilience, guiding you towards tangible and measurable outcomes.
