Beyond the Clouds of Cancer – Life is like a journey in a boat traveling down a river. The journey begins with parents and family members. Along the way other travelers join us on the boat. Then friends, spouses, children, and even adversaries become part of the journey. Each traveler, including ourselves, enters and leaves the boat at various points along the way.
Sometimes the river is clear and calm making it easy to navigate. Other times misty clouds obscure our vision and murky waters conceal dangers beneath the river’s surface. Then there’s rapids and devastating waterfalls. No matter how much we try to avoid going over waterfalls they’re inevitable.
One of the most devasting waterfalls is cancer. I’ve lost many fellow travelers in my life’s journey to cancer including my father. Whether it is your own battle with cancer or that of a loved one, cancer invades everyone’s life. Even after a century of research, medical science can only treat some forms of cancer but not all of them. According to Worldwide Cancer Research and NIH (National Institute of Health), there isn’t one type of cancer, but multitudes and because cancer cells constantly mutate, they’re able to outmaneuver treatments. This means every cancerous tumor has its own unique genetic mutations so a drug which works for one type of cancer won’t work for another. Too bad cancer doesn’t get cancer.
When I was in Hollywood during the promotional tour for my first book “Never Letting Go,” my manager Rocky booked me as a guest on “The Wendi Cooper Show.” We immediately clicked with Wendi. Her striking beauty, sense of humor, youthful energy and positive mindset made it impossible not to like her.
Refusing to be a victim, she taught herself how to write, direct and produce TV commercials. Despite door after Hollywood door being slammed in her face, she persisted and emerged as a pioneer in infomercials, became a HSN product expert and launched some of the most well-known consumer products. Wendi received 17 Telly Awards for her work in TV commercials. But for Wendi, her greatest accomplishment was her two beloved sons Wiatt and Chance.
Wendi and I had a great on-air chemistry and I became her repeat guest. After one show, Wendi, Rocky, and I visited a Hollywood cemetery to search for graves of celebrities. That may sound macabre, but then again, I’m a medium and paranormal investigator. Wendi joked, “It’s not every day I get to do a celebrity ghost tour with the Psychic Lawyer!”
It was a beautiful sunny day and while I was searching for Marilyn Monroe’s resting place, Wendi and Rocky sat on a small grassy knoll. Creative people often see recognizable shapes in clouds. Wendi and Rocky shared their impressions about the faces and images they saw in the clouds. They agreed it felt like they’d been friends for years.
Then Wendi said, “When I was a child, I used to look for faces in the clouds like this with my mother Elizabeth—I really miss her.”
“I miss my mom too,” Rocky replied.
As a beautiful pink cloud wafted above them Wendi revealed, “I’ve battled ovarian cancer for years—supposedly it’s in remission. I watched my mom die slowly and painfully—it was horrible—I’ll never let that happen to myself.”
A few years later, I was honored to have Wendi as a guest on my livestream show “The Psychic and The Doc.” She was as positive and energetic as ever. However, after the show Wendi told Rocky and I the cancer had returned. Her prognosis was terminal.
Death is inevitable and the ultimate waterfall in everyone’s journey through the river of life. However, Wendi’s judgment was not clouded and she believed death should be approached with clarity. Between my work as an attorney and as a medium, I’ve helped many people cope with death. I’ve never seen anyone approach death with such intelligence, grace, and dignity as Wendi Cooper. While her physical health deteriorated, her strength of character did not. Wendi refused to let cancer win and planned to leave this material world on her own terms and at the time of her choosing.
According to UCLA Health, “The California End of Life Option Act (EOLOA) allows a terminally ill adult with a life expectancy of six months or less to end their life with an aid-in-dying drug. The terminally ill person must be a California resident and must request the drug from their physician.”
Wendi had observed me conduct readings many times on her show and in person. She asked me if I would do a Zoom conference with her husband and sons to help them understand our souls live on after physical death. I was humbled by and honored to accept her request.
The Zoom session included Wendi, her husband, sons Wiatt and Chance, Rocky and me. I’d never met Wendi’s family before and was impressed at how accomplished they were. Her son Chance is an extremely gifted and renowned artist who graciously provided the portrait he created of Wendi for this article.
I felt it best not to have a set agenda so I let the conversation flow so everyone could express their feelings and ask questions. This intensely emotional meeting evolved into an interdimensional communication session as Wendi’s loved ones in spirit came forward.
They each had messages for Wendi and her family, particularly the spirit of Wendi’s mother, Elizabeth, who communicated she would be there when Wendi transitioned. She had a specific message for Chance about a “bunny rabbit.” At the time, Chance wasn’t sure what “bunny rabbit” meant, but he made a note of it.
A few days later Wendi emailed me, “There are no words for the peace it has brought to my husband, Chance and Wiatt after meeting you and feeling they will have a connection to me, even my husband was talking about ‘it’ with more ease and comfort. Their peace is my peace.”
Wendi chose her brother’s house in Laguna Beach to enter the Afterlife. It is a gorgeous location overlooking the ocean. She was surrounded by her beloved family. As the drug took effect Wendi peacefully drifted into unconsciousness. Hours slipped by yet Wendi had not yet transitioned.
Waiting for the death of a loved one is exhausting. Chance told me he was so emotionally drained he went to a random room in his uncle’s house to lay down. On the bed he spotted a stuffed toy bunny. Chance somehow felt comforted by the stuffed toy bunny, cuddled with it and fell into a deep sleep. Not long after he snapped awake and realized the “bunny rabbit” message from the spirit of his grandmother Elizabeth meant her spirit would be there to greet his mother Wendi when she transitioned. At that precise moment, his aunt told him Wendi had just passed.
Life may be like traveling in a boat upon a river, but the journey doesn’t end at the waterfall. Nor do we ever lose our beloved fellow passengers. We will be reunited with our loved ones in spirit when it is our time to embark upon a new voyage which flows beyond the clouds into the eternal light of the afterlife.
