Embracing Transformation: Step 12 of the NLP-Powered Journey – As the holidays are in full swing and we arrive at the final step of our 12-step journey, I want to congratulate and toast all of you who have traveled this path with me. Look back and remember where you stood as we began this journey. Pat yourself on the back. Your consistency and dedication to building yourself into the person you want to become are what got you to this point. Cheers to you!!!!
Step 12, “Embracing Transformation,” marks a significant milestone in our collective effort to heal, grow, and reclaim our lives. This step is particularly poignant for men who have served in the military or as first responders, as it involves personal growth from what we’ve been through and embracing our new identity and future. Say this out loud, “I am not who I was. I am who I WILL become.” Again… Again…
The holiday season, especially Christmas, can be a bittersweet time for many. While it’s a period of joy and togetherness, it can also magnify the struggles that challenge us all. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! All human beings struggle with the memories of past traumas; they are human experiences. These can clash with the festive atmosphere, creating a dissonance that is difficult to navigate. Here are two NLP gifts from me to support you through these holidays.
Understanding the Holiday Struggles of PTSD
Christmas is a time when families gather, and the emphasis is on joy, peace, and love. However, for many of us, the holidays can evoke mixed emotions:
- Isolation in a Crowded Room: When surrounded by loved ones, we can feel utterly disconnected due to emotional numbing or overwhelming memories.
- Triggered Memories: Festive sounds, sights, or even the scent of a Christmas tree can trigger flashbacks to traumatic events, making it hard to stay present.
- Emotional Distance: The expectation of being cheerful can feel like a heavy burden, especially when dealing with the lingering effects of PTSD, leading to feelings of guilt or shame for not being able to fully engage.
- Family Tensions: The stress of maintaining a happy façade can strain relationships with family members who may not fully understand the depth of what you’re experiencing.
These struggles are real, and they can make the holiday season challenging. We all have some Post-Traumatic Stress. Embrace these techniques, and you will navigate these challenges with greater resilience.
1. The Timeline Therapy: Healing Through the Passage of Time
Timeline Therapy allows individuals to heal past traumas by revisiting them in a controlled and safe manner. It is especially effective during the holiday season, as it helps to reconcile the past with the present, allowing you to experience the joy of the holidays without the weight of unresolved emotions.
- Establish Your Timeline: Visualize your life as a timeline, stretching from the past to the present and into the future. Float above a traumatic memory on this timeline that resurfaces during the holidays.
- Revisit the Memory from a Distance: Imagine yourself hovering above this memory, observing it from a safe distance. This detachment allows you to view the event without being overwhelmed by the emotions associated with it.
- Transform the Memory: As you observe the memory, imagine surrounding it with positive energy, love, and understanding. See yourself offering comfort to the version of you that experienced the trauma. Watch as the memory shifts, becoming less intense and more integrated into your life story.
- Anchor the Healing: As you progress along your timeline to the present, anchor the feelings of healing and resolution within yourself. Visualize how this healing will allow you to engage more fully with the present moment, especially during the holiday season.
By using Timeline Therapy, you can transform the impact of past traumas, allowing you to experience the holidays with a sense of peace and connection rather than isolation and pain.
2. The Swish Pattern:
Redirecting Negative Patterns The Swish Pattern is an NLP technique that helps reprogram negative thought patterns and behaviors by replacing them with positive alternatives. During the holidays, when triggers and stressors are abundant, this technique can be invaluable in helping you maintain control over your emotions and reactions.
- Identify the Negative Pattern: Identify a specific negative thought or behavior that tends to arise during the holidays, such as anxiety when entering crowded spaces or frustration with family dynamics. Make it a black-and-white image.
- Create a Replacement Image: Next, visualize a positive, empowering alternative to this negative pattern. For example, imagine yourself feeling calm and centered in a crowded room or being patient and understanding with other family members. Make it bright and colorful.
- Swish the Images: Hold the negative image in your mind, then quickly “swish” it away, replacing it with the positive image. Make the positive image big and vivid while the negative image fades into the background.
- Reinforce the Pattern: Repeat the swish several times until the positive image automatically replaces the negative one in your mind. Over time, this will rewire your brain to default to the positive pattern, reducing stress and increasing your ability to enjoy the holidays.
The Swish Pattern empowers you to take control of your mental and emotional state, enabling you to respond to holiday stressors with resilience and grace.
Step 12, “Embracing Transformation,” offers a culmination of the tools and insights we’ve explored throughout this journey. By utilizing Timeline Therapy and the Swish Pattern, you can navigate the holiday season with a renewed sense of self-compassion, resilience, and connection.
Our struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress are real, and they don’t magically disappear during the holidays. Yet, when we embrace the power of our transformation with NLP, we allow ourselves to experience more joy of the season without being controlled by the past.
