How the Soul Care Experience Can Help With Anxiety and Depression – Imagine being lost in a dense, dark forest with no clear path to guide you. The thick undergrowth and tangled vines are obstacles in every direction, and you feel trapped and disoriented. This is what severe anxiety and depression can feel like for many individuals. It can be an overwhelming, suffocating experience, leaving people feeling helpless and lost.
The Soul Care experience is like a compass that can help one navigate through the thicket of emotions and psychological distress. It leverages various forms of creative expression, including meditation, journaling, essential oils, and painting. Helping one confront and work through difficult emotional experiences that may be challenging to express verbally. By connecting with their innermost feelings, thoughts, and desires through the creative process, and not the art itself, the person can find a path to healing and transformation.
Anxiety and depression continue to be prevalent mental health issues affecting millions worldwide. More than 40 million adults in the U.S. (19.1%) have an anxiety disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, with the numbers only rising. Soul Care offers a unique approach to art therapy. It’s the kind of therapy alternative medicine practitioners are increasingly referring people to – providing a safe space to express oneself creatively and improve mood, increasing feelings of relaxation and well-being.
My Own Journey
Like most good ideas, my idea for Soul Care started with a personal experience. I went through an extremely challenging transition in my life. As a long-time teacher, I knew I needed a constructive outlet to express myself. From a little girl, I always enjoyed art, but it wasn’t until this crisis that I tried using it in combination with meditation, journaling, and the healing powers of the ocean. I realized that if I harnessed these mediums in the right cadence, I could create an impactful experience.
The purpose of art and painting, specifically, as I learned during my journey, is to serve as a language beyond speech. “Art makes it possible to transform human suffering,” said Shawn McNiff, an expert on the psychology of art.
During my therapy, I realized that I needed to regain autonomy and improve my relationship with myself. The art, combined with the other elements in the process, helped me with my obsessive thoughts, increasing my self-esteem and self-image. Most importantly, it helped me see who I truly was and what I could do and accomplish.
We Are Designed to Create
Whether we consider ourselves an artist or not, we were all designed to create. We can best create when we are in a place of peace and calm and living in the present moment.
Done in the right way, in the right mindset, and in the right ambiance, fear, and anxiety begin melting away as the Soul Care experience engages the senses and ignites the creativity—almost without having to think—allowing us to release what simply cannot be put into words.
It’s like an emotional first aid kit that takes users on a personal journey of self-reflection, self-love, healing, and expressiveness, giving the person the tools to expand on this experience every day of their life.
It’s About the Process
The Soul Care experience involves each of the materials in the box, which, orchestrated together and in sequence, helps one embark on a journey of self-discovery. The process begins with setting up the painting space, followed by journaling, applying essential oils, reading positive affirmations, and soothing meditation with sounds of the ocean that guides you right into the painting.
True art is about giving shape to feelings, where there is no judgment, no being rushed for time. So here, the interpretation of the artwork is not the key. It is the expression that’s important. As the user creates their own personal painting, they will come to their own conclusions. They will see things from a new perspective. The messages will reveal themselves—more than the art itself—and the effects will last longer.
The Effects Can Be Profound
The unique Soul Care experience is designed to help individuals dealing with severe anxiety and depression. It can help with stress relief, grief recovery, difficult life transitions, or simply wanting to take some time out for self-care. It can allow one to confront and work through difficult emotional experiences that may be challenging to convey verbally.
More and more integrative medicine practitioners are realizing that such therapy can also improve mood, increasing feelings of relaxation and well-being. By taking a holistic approach, the healing it provides addresses all aspects of a person’s being, including the mind, body, and soul.
The trends of anxiety and depression within the population are only rising. Not only is Soul Care designed for this audience but also for holistic medical professionals who, with their patients, can use Soul Care in tandem with the care they are giving.
Each component of the Soul Care experience on its own can be a stress reliever, but when combined into a concerted series of steps, as described, it’s this multi-pronged experience that has the most profound effect.
I learned this from my own experience. Bringing clarity, peace, and hope to one’s life, Soul Care is designed to pave a path—out of the tangled, dark forest—and toward a future equipped with the skills to recognize the beauty within you and life itself.
