Level Up Your Communication Skills in 2024: Helpful Techniques for Building Connection – Happy today and welcome to another new year. One powerful avenue for improvement that stands the test of time is the art of effective communication. Today I want to talk to you about how you can enhance your communication skills, build stronger relationships, and make 2024 a year of deeper connection with yourself and others.
The Power of NLP in Communication
Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is a versatile and practical framework that can empower you to purposely seek possibility and help you to connect with yourself and others on a deeper level. It delves into the intricacies of how we think, communicate, and interpret the world around us. One key aspect of NLP is its focus on language patterns, which can be a game-changer in your interactions with loved ones.
Engaging with Loved Ones in New Ways
Think about the people in your life whom you love and cherish. Whether it’s your family, friends, or a significant other, the way you communicate with them plays a pivotal role in the quality of your relationships. In 2024, let’s make a commitment to engage with these individuals in fresh, meaningful ways. Take a deep breath before engaging with some of these more challenging individuals and ask yourself, “How can I empower this person today?” Take another deep breath, and do that instead.
The Power of Active Listening (S, E, or A?)
Active listening is a cornerstone of effective communication. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, practice truly listening to what your loved ones are saying. Reflect on their words, ask clarifying questions, and show empathy by acknowledging their emotions. By doing so, you create an environment of trust and understanding. Remember, it’s not about convincing them of your perspective; it’s about fostering a genuine connection.
Use S.E.A. to find out what the person you’re talking to needs. This stands for Silence, Empathy or Advice. When we know how the person wants to receive feedback from us, we can listen with those ears. Sometimes we might think someone wants advice, but really they just need a sounding board.
Nonviolent Communication (NVC)
Nonviolent Communication, developed by Marshall B. Rosenberg, is a valuable addition to your communication toolkit. It really emphasizes empathy, clarity and understanding. There are 4 steps to Nonviolent Communication, which I cover more in-depth in my new course, and I’ll introduce you to the first one here in this article.
Observation vs. Evaluation. Saying what is and what exactly happened instead of saying what you made it mean and putting your toppings on it. For example: “Omg, she is so rude and she is never on time at meetings.” is an evaluation, whereas” I noticed she was late to the meeting.” is an observation. When you speak in observations, people are less likely to need to defend themselves from your evaluations.
The Role of Core Values
In the journey to become a more effective communicator, it’s essential to align your actions with your core values. Your core values are the guiding principles that define who you are and what you stand for. They serve as a compass in life, influencing your choices, decisions, and interactions with others.
Why Core Values Matter
Core values provide clarity and purpose. They help you understand what truly matters to you and guide you in setting meaningful goals. In the context of communication, your core values act as a filter through which you express yourself. When your words and actions align with your values, your communication becomes authentic and powerful.
Using Core Values in Your Communication
Imagine a scenario where you and a loved one have differing opinions or are facing a challenging conversation. Your core values can act as a bridge, allowing you to express your perspective while respecting theirs. By framing your communication around shared values, you create common ground and open the door to constructive dialogue.
Take Your Next Step
While this article provides a glimpse into the world of effective communication and the importance of core values, there is so much more to explore. In my new course, ‘Level Up Your Language & Your Life,’ you’ll dive deeper into the intricacies of your words, core values, and nonviolent communication. You’ll learn how to leverage these tools to navigate complex relationships, resolve conflicts, and lead a more fulfilling life in 2024 and beyond.
As we embrace the possibilities of a new year, let’s commit to making 2024 a year of transformative communication. By enhancing our understanding of ourselves and others, embracing nonviolent communication, and staying true to our core values, we can build stronger, more authentic connections with the people we love. These are the building blocks for a brighter, more fulfilling year ahead.
Remember, it’s not about convincing others of your viewpoint; it’s about recognizing that when we change our words, we can truly change our world!
