Survivor’s Insight: The Diagnosis – Hearing “You have breast cancer,” your world turns upside down. As a survivor, I know all too well. A melange of emotions arises – surprise, disappointment, sadness, anger, confusion and More … from that moment, Grab your journal. You will be so thankful you did. Bring it to every appointment. I am happy to share a printable one I made. Email me ~ “Journal,” and It’s yours. As I woke up from a lumpectomy….. Before they put me under & all the moments prior, I never thought I had cancer. I was the epitome of health. Ask Anyone! I truly thought I was removing a Benign Tumor. According to Docs and even a biopsy! …. I wake up, my husband of 25 years, next to me in tears. HE tells me. …. “Babe, you have cancer and it’s bad.”
It’s natural to grapple with this whirlwind of feelings. Please know that every emotion you have is valid! You have the right to feel however you need/want to. Never Apologize! Scream… if you want. Cry.. if you want… Be alone for a little… if you want… Feeling these emotions & giving yourself the space & permission to do so is the first step toward healing. It’s not a sign of weakness but a testament to our inherent humanity. You do not need anyone’s permission. Please, GIVE YOURSELF GRACE!
Engaging with Professionals
Your medical team will be your closest ally. It’s essential to foster open communication, ASK, and always seek 2nd opinions, always. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, listen to that gut feeling. You are not just a patient. You are an active participant in your healing journey. Choosing your care team is more than just checking credentials. It’s about finding those who align with your beliefs & needs. I may hate the Dr. that you think is the best & vice versa. That is OK!. I have compiled a comprehensive list of IMPORTANT questions to ask your doctor. Email me ~ LIST.
Communication
Is important. It’s essential to express your needs with loved ones and know it’s okay to ask for help. People process emotions differently; some may be close while others seem distant—it’s about their journey, not just yours. Post-diagnosis days can blur; recording conversations in a journal or voice memos helps revisit essential details. Embrace gestures of love—whether it’s food, rides, or a simple message. Find beauty in unwavering support.
Protect your space and energy. Language matters; choose words that reflect your experience. Avoid traditional war metaphors if they don’t resonate. Embrace your journey with love and positivity. Even in treatment discussions, use positive language. Your unique journey deserves healing energy and love. Remember, every journey is unique.
Every survivor is a superhero! The strength isn’t just physical but mental & emotional. Embrace the strength within, and surround yourself with positive people, music, meditations, books, visualizations, affirmations and especially your care team. Even just Visualizing healing can be a powerful tool! I found recording myself, my process, my thoughts & emotions live & in the moment on my podcast to be very healing! Check it out – Link Below!
Coping
It can be overwhelming. Here are some coping strategies tailored specifically for that challenging period:
*Stay Connected: Maintain connections with your loved ones. Surround yourself with positive, understanding people who uplift your spirits. Avoid isolation, as social connections are crucial during challenging times. Do not get me wrong. You need alone time and that is crucial, BUT do not stay there!
Be kind and patient with yourself. Practice self-compassion and treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer to a close friend.
* Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to stay grounded in the present moment. Breathing exercises and guided meditations help reduce anxiety & promote calmness. This can be as simple as taking 3 deep breaths as you focus on your breath ANYWHERE … ANYTIME…
*Creative Outlets: Engage in creative activities like painting, drawing, or crafting. Maybe even write future letters to yourself, like a 90-day letter. Here is a short sample- Hey You. We did it! Another 90 days have flown by. Look how far we have come. I am so proud of you. You are surrounding yourself with loved ones and giving yourself the space to heal and that takes courage….. You get the idea. Look forward!
