Warning: Don’t Wait for Motivation to Show Up…. – Learn the Correct Formula and Get it Instantly! – As a Licensed Mental Health Therapist and Life Coach, I often see individuals set a desired goal and start to make headway on it but then become frustrated when they fizzle out on doing the work and therefore don’t achieve the results they are hoping for.
Motivation Pre-check
I’m going to share the big secret to what’s going on, but first, it’s important for folks to do a pre-check:
A. Check in with yourself to make sure you have a big enough “why” you are wanting the results. Your goal needs to be something very important to you and something that makes you feel really juiced when you envision yourself achieving it.
B. I always remind folks that if they want to achieve anything, they need to be taking CONSISTENT steps towards that goal. Otherwise, it is impossible for the results to show up. The great news is the steps don’t have to be huge; they just need to be taken regularly. But there’s also a big factor that most people aren’t aware of, and that is what the rest of this article addresses. I want to share this with you so you can have your greatest chance at obtaining/achieving any desired goal.
How Does Motivation Work?
If you have a big enough why and IF you are committed to being consistent, that is an excellent beginning. However, what most people do from this point is as follows: they feel jazzed in the beginning and start out taking action when their motivation level is high. Because they are taking action, their motivation is present. But then they make a big mistake. They stop taking action and then say to themselves…” I’ll get right back to it as soon as I feel motivated.” This strategy assumes that motivation is something that just shows up on its own. So they wait. And wait. …..
They then give up. Feel defeated, attribute it to a weakness of theirs, and are less hopeful about being able to achieve this goal if they try again. The sad thing is that none of this is true.
Fact: Motivation doesn’t work that way.
This was first brought to my attention by Darren Hardy. When I heard this brilliant insight, it struck me as to not only how very true this is but also how prevalent this mistake of false assumption is being made all the time. It is happening without people being aware of it. And without this awareness, people don’t know how to fix the problem!
What You Need to Know about Motivation
Here’s what they need to know. Motivation comes when we first TAKE ACTION. Just like it did when they first started out on their quest! In order for motivation to continue, the person needs to continue to take action FIRST.
In my Dec BHL article, I talked about the incredible power of movement. Our bodies were designed to MOVE. When we take physical movement, our bodies release our natural feel-good chemicals. We feel better, and we think better. And by taking physical action on our goal, we are increasing our self-esteem, energy, and feeling of self-confidence. ALL of which becomes the fuel of motivation. It is literally what motivation is made of.
List the small steps you need to take in order to reach your goal, and then take action every day if possible. Even if you only have 10 min to give on a particular day…TAKE IT. Know that taking action creates momentum, and that is incredibly powerful stuff.
So don’t sit around waiting for motivation to show up at your doorstep. Get up and take action on your desired goal and know that it is in the action that you will feel motivated. If you want more motivation, take more action. Action produces motivation. I encourage you to memorize this important formula and then try it out for yourself.
